This little family came up to meet me at beautiful Barrington Hall for a fun family photo session! I love this location. The gardens are gorgeous, and the big columns and steps up to the house are perfect for family shoots. Here are a few of my favorites!!

Motherhood, mommy & me, just the girls sessions, whatever you want to call them, I adore them! These two especially! I have been very fortunate to have photographed them a few times, and enjoy our sessions each and every time. Again, it’s fun to watch the little one grow and change with each session.

Here are some of my favorites from this sweet summer session! We headed to the lake again and the sunset was just perfect!

This family met me out at the lake on a steamy Georgia evening this summer. They are one of the families that I have photographed a few time this year, and I genuinely enjoy seeing them each time. It’s so fun to watch my client’s family’s grow and change with each session, and when you have really little ones, it happens fast and more often than you might think. Just check out their Fresh 48 session, and then head over to their in-home newborn session, both on my blog!

There are a couple of perks to using the same photographer session after session. One, is that your images will have some cohesiveness as far as style, making your gallery walls much easier to put together. Your kids are also comfortable with the photographer, so you spend less time warming them, and your husband, to the idea of them pointing a camera in your face for a bit.

It’s also a nice compliment to me when my client’s come back each time! Here’s a few of my favorites from our steamy summer session at the lake!

Whether it’s the first time we’ve worked together, or the tenth, I’d love to plan a session for your family! Contact me at 505-414-7224, or click below to get started planning your custom session!

I don’t know why I have waited so long to blog this session…or so many others lately. The blogging bug has bit me though, and I am so excited to dig back in and share some of my recent favorites!

This family took me out on an adventure, and I can definitely say that I have never had this much fun on a session! Beyond taking photos, we had a great time just exploring this beautiful location, and taking in a gorgeous sunset!

I met Bekah (mom) through one of my photography groups last year, and I just cannot say enough nice things about her. She was one of the first real life (real life meaning not just a person I talked to on forums or Insta) photography people I had ever met. I was so nervous to meet a real life photographer for the first time, I was afraid she was going to call me on my bluff, and tell me I had no business being in the photography community. I tend to overthink things, and catastrophize…obviously. Instead she was, and has continued to be very welcoming, helpful, genuine, and just an awesome person to be around. She has truly made this journey in to the photography business a little easier, and more pleasant to navigate! Not to mention, she is also an amazing senior photographer, and she also did the amazing head shots you see here on my website!

Anywho, I was so excited when she asked me to take her family’s photos. We took a trip to Arabia Mountain, which is just outside of Atlanta. It’s an amazing spot with views unlike any other in Georgia. It actually reminds me a lot of where I grew up out west. It’s a short, and easy hike up to the top and the views are amazing at sunset! It’s definitely on my top list of places to shoot in Atlanta.

This One Goes Out to the Mama's

One of the best parts of my job is getting to capture motherhood!! From the first hours in the hospital, to watching them prepare for a new stage in life after high school, I love being a part of capturing it.

At each session I always grab a few shots of just mom and her babies. I always hope that these are pictures that will be passed down for many generations, and that you and your children look back at them and smile at all the happy memories you made.

To all the mom's out there, thank you for letting me be a part of your special moments, and allowing me to create something beautiful for you and your children to hold on to. Hope you have a very happy Mother's Day filled with love, and maybe some peace and quiet ;)

3 Tips for Preparing for Your Family Photo Session

Family is kind of my jam. I love meeting and working with small families, big families, and even extended families. I get asked a lot about what my clients should do to prepare for their family photo session. Beyond the most popular question of what to wear, there are a few other tips I have that will help insure a fun and successful family photo shoot.

1. Wardrobe!

This is my number one question when I ask clients if they have any questions. I even wrote a blog post about it here. I think if there is one tip from there that is my favorite, it's to be yourselves and to be comfortable!

One thing I didn't mention in that post, is that you should leave plenty of time for getting ready, this way you don't feel rushed and disorganized getting to your session, this can set the tone for the session. I suggest my moms make a day of it, get your hair and makeup professionally done. First of all, you'll feel your best, and it's one less thing you have to do!

2. Timing

I LOVE to go out and shoot in the evenings right before sunset. I also have a toddler who's bedtime for half of the year is at sunset, that hour before the sun sets is called "The Witching Hour" in our house. So I wouldn't dare take him out for pictures at that time! Luckily, I can shoot at other times of the day, like right after sunrise, or we can find some open shade in the late afternoon. Be sure to tell your photographer what works best for your families schedule, no one knows your kids like you do and we all want them to be their happiest at your session.

Be advised that if you do want those beautiful golden rays of light filling your photos, the hour before sunset is the best time, it's not called Magic Hour for nothing! I have found that some well timed naps, a good meal, and plenty of their favorite snacks can go a long way! That being said, whatever time of day your session is, please be sure to come well rested and well fed!

3. Try to have fun!

Hug your kids, kiss your wife, snuggle, laugh, joke, giggle, play, and love!! Let me capture who your family really is. I know that having a camera pointed in your face can be intimidating, but the more you interact with each other, and less with me, the more natural and emotive images you are going to get. The kind of images that truly show off who you are. The best images are the ones where you are looking at each other, these are usually where I capture the most natural smiles and connections.

Leave the cheese at home. While I love a good shot of everyone looking at the camera, and I always try to get a few, constantly having everyone look at the camera and say cheese will result in a lot of unnatural photos. Plus I find kids don't respond well to it, and it can get stressful for them. Which can put a halt to a session pretty quickly!

As with any good relationship, communication is key. I always try to make my sessions an enjoyable experience for all, I will ask lots of questions in our pre-session consultations to help me get to know your family. I also encourage you to communicate all of your concerns with me before your session. If conditions (schedule changes, illness, etc.) are less than ideal we can always find a better time.

What are some things that you worry about before your family photo sessions? Is there something that holds you back from booking more family photo sessions? Please leave a comment, or send me a message!!

Blackwell Family | Woodstock Family Photographer

I was so excited when this family called me to do an extended family session. I love the energy I get from working with big families! This was to be Grandma's Christmas present. They are a big family and are scattered on each coast so getting together for the holidays is so special to them. The son whom I spoke with, told me that last year they attempted to get a family picture using cell phones, but it just didn't go as planned. This year they really wanted to gift his Mom/Grandma with the gift of professional family portraits, which she can cherish and use to show off her wonderful group of children and grand children!

Back again for part 2 of this family's photos! You can view part 1 here.

It was quite the event getting our second round of family photos done, we just couldn't get our schedules to line up! But, the universe had something in mind! Just a few days before, the skies opened up and dumped over 7 inches of snow on us here in Georgia! It was so beautiful and I was so fortunate some of it stuck around for this session!

I met Lauren, the mom of this family, while working on a project with the Roswell Women's Club this summer. She was such a delight to work with, and I was so excited when she contacted me to take pictures of her active, spunky, and energetic family!

She wanted some pictures for their Christmas cards, but most importantly some pictures of her with the boys since she's usually the one behind the camera! I hear this story entirely too often, and it's something I have to remind myself of as well!
