Lehmann Family | Roswell Family Photographer

The weekend I was scheduled to take this families pictures the weather kept doing this dance of being sunny on minute, then rainy the next! The forecast the night before said it wasn't going to rain the morning of our session so we decided to head out. Of course that morning, the sky decided to do a different dance! We headed out anyway and thankfully the rain stopped while we were out shooting! We all really loved the overcast, foggy morning, and the look it gave to the photos! Reminded all of us of Scotland.

You'll see that we were on the go a lot this session. When I am a shooting session with toddlers that is usually the case. I just go with it though and try to catch all their fast and happy faces!! If there is one thing I can tell parents of toddlers, is that I don't expect them to sit still at the session. Yes we will try to get that "Christmas Card shot" but sometimes it doesn't happen. What does happen with child led sessions, is a lot of images of happy faces that capture your child's personality.

This sweet little family of 3 asked me to do their family pictures for the year! We met on a dewy, Saturday morning in October at Tanyard Creek park. The leaves were not quite in full color for fall photos, but were getting there! We had a fun time just hanging out and exploring the park.

How to Dress for Family Photos

This is by far the biggest question I get asked most often before a session.

As far as wardrobe suggestions, I will start off by saying, I am probably the least stylish person I know, but here are a few general tips to help you out. You can also refer to a couple of my Pinterest boards here and here for inspiration!

Coordination is key

  • Don't be too matchy, coordinating colors and patterns are awesome, but no 90's white t-shirts and jeans a la Akward Family Photos. Only because it looks dated, and when everyone wears the same color, you like one big blob. Limit your patterns to one or two people, too many can distract from the final image.

  • Most of my sessions are outdoors, depending on how green it is outside, I would avoid wearing green so you don't blend in. If it is fall or winter and the leaves have changed and there's lots of yellow and red in the trees, it would be a great color to wear. Dark purples, deep reds, and golds would look good too in the fall.
  • Neutrals like creme, grey, and tan, muted blues and blushes, in different layers/textures always look good no matter the season. The key to neutrals is to use them in variety of layers and textures. A cardigan here, some lace there, maybe some corduroy and denim. Mix up your shirt styles, pants, skirts and dresses in different fabrics. Here's a good example of that.
  • Another way to choose your color pallette is to look right at home. Since these pictures will hang on your walls, choose colors that complement your home style and decor.

Layers and accessories

  • A cardigan or a scarf can add some dimension. I love layering fitted jackets and vests in the winter. A statement necklace, a bold colored or shiny metal cuff, or some fun earrings can add interest. Limit accessories to one or two pieces to keep a more classic look to your portraits.

Wardrobe Building

  • Pick one outfit and build around it. Whether it's a special outfit you have for your kids, or picking an outfit that makes you feel fabulous, and building around it.
  • Be conscious of where we are shooting your session. If we are going to venture around the city, being super dressed up and in your stilettos will work, might not look great or be practical shooting in a park or field.

Be true to you

  • In the end these pictures are about you and the connection between the members of your family. You don't have to be a fashionista, you just need to put a little thought and care into it. Choose clothes you are all comfortable in, and that speak to your unique personalities. Using this tip alone, I guarantee you have something in your closet that will work.

  • neon colors - they will cast a color on your skin
  • narrow pinstripes, they have a weird effect on camera
  • anything with logos, or character shirts
  • short skirts/dresses, I will ask you to sit on ground at some point for some fun cuddly family shots, and you can end up looking stiff and uncomfortable if you're trying to stay covered.

I know how hard it can be to pick outfits, so I am always happy to get text's or emails from my clients with pictures to help them choose!

Meghan & Lillie Sunflower session | Cumming Family Photographer

I've lived in this area for a few years now, but this year was the first I had heard about this amazing place! It's the Anderson's sunflower farm in Cumming, GA. The flowers only bloom for a couple of weeks a year, it is quite the site to see! I put a call out to have someone join me for an evening in the sunflowers, Meghan responded, and I am so glad she did! They were the perfect clients to take out to this spot.

Baby K | Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

I don't think there is a session I love more than in-home newborns. This one was especially special to me. This sweet little girl is the daughter of one of my very best friends from college. It's amazing to see how far our friendship has come in the past number of years, from our crazy late nights in college, to our crazy late nights with babies. I was so excited and grateful to capture these moments for her family.

While I was out west this summer I got to hang out with my little sister and her mom. We had lots of fun hanging out in the cutest little downtown in Texas.

The Valdez's | New Mexico Photographer

I was so excited when my sister asked me to take some updated photos of her and her husband on my recent trip home to New Mexico. She picked out the perfect location for a gorgeous sunset shoot! It seriously makes me want to move back to New Mexico just so I can shoot in such a gorgeous location. The only other place I love shooting more is at the beach!

Bevel Family at the Pumpkin Patch | Woodstock Family Photographer

As promised, here is the second family that came out for pictures at the pumpkin patch a couple of weekends ago!

This family of 3, soon to be 4, were a lot of fun. They have a daughter who is the same age as my son, which worked out great for them, because I am well versed in toddler chasing and photographing. It's no easy feat! She was a fun, energetic, charming little girl. I even jumped in and helped them pick out their pumpkin! Enjoy!

I had a hard time picking my favorites from this session. So many of these photos spoke to my documentary photographer heart! I've been playing around with adding slideshows and video to my sessions, I unfortunately did not take any video, but I still love the story these images tell.
